New Year Intentions

The start of a new year is always a good time to refresh our perspectives on our lives and make some gentle adjustments to our habits. Unfortunately, sometimes our goal setting can be overwhelming and unachievable, setting us up for disappointment shortly thereafter. Put less pressure on setting lofty goals and expectations for yourself and attempt to set achievable and realistic life improvement opportunities.

When setting your goals for the year, think about aspects of your life you would like to improve, and break down the steps needed to get there. Set smaller, more attainable goals in order to reach your larger and overarching goals.

For example:

If your goal is to get healthier, think about your current habits and how you would like to improve upon them. Start by increasing your water intake by one additional water bottle per day. Add one vegetable to your lunch or dinner that you would not normally add. Try new recipes to see how you can even enjoy new vegetables! Add 15 minutes of additional activity to your day to get your heart pumping. Once you feel comfortable with these smaller steps, continue on with your journey in order to make larger strides.

Or, if your goal is to reduce your debt, review your current budget and see where adjustments can be made. Start by purchasing one less coffee or lunch per week (bring one from home instead). If you have loans or other large debts, add a few extra dollars to your monthly payments to pay down your balance. Rethink your daily and weekly expenditures to ensure your purchases are necessary and not frivolous.

By breaking down our large goals in smaller steps, we can track our progress towards reaching our goals. Also, we will feel more accomplished when we check off the smaller steps when working towards our bigger intentions and plans.
